SELF-TANNER?

topic posted Wed, April 21, 2004 - 11:48 AM by  Camille
Yes, it's that time of year.... self-tanner season! I've
never been into the self tanning thing, as the few
times I've used it, I've turned bright orange and
splotchy-- not cute! Does anyone have any self tanning
advice that they'd like to share?

Products they love?

Believe it or not, I like Banana Boat Sunless Tanning Spray (soft-medium blend). It's cheap, it's easy, it's not orange. I've only used it on my legs, tho.

Would love to hear anyone's mystic tanning experiences!!

OK.... tried the new "Build A Tan" from Neutrogena. Had scary, orange, self-tanning marks all over. Ugh.

Also tried the legendary Mystic Tan -- twice! I have to say that I was very pleased with the results. It looked very natural and lasted for a little less than week. I think it's a great thing if you have any kind of event that you'd like to have a little color for. I would only recommend putting the lotion they give you in between your toes as well as around your nails-- the skin there is a little dry so it picks up more color and is more noticeable.

Honestly, as a self-tanner for years, I can't recommend a self-tanner that works without giving somewhat orange-y results. I don't think they exist. I've been drawn to Nivea Silky Shimmer Lotion rather than get that George Hamilton glow. I recently bought Stila Sun Gel. It's a bronzer (so it washes off) but it looks pretty natural. Two problems, though: It's a bit pricey ($24) and it's only for the face.

Coppertone Endless Summer in Light-medium. It makes my pale white skin a nice shade of peachy tan, not bright orange. It also comes in medium-dark. I reccomend the lotion, not the foam.
      Good Luck!

I've tried lots. I'm really fair, so if they're bad, they're really bad on me. The most natural color and least streaking for me is definitely the Neutrogena spray. It's so streakproof, I can even use the dark one. You do have to spread it out very very evenly while it's still wet. That is the key to any sef-tanner, and the bad ones will streak anyway. Exfoliate first before any of them. However DO NOT try the new fine aerosol spray mist from Neutrogena, it was awful! I don't know how they could put it on the market, when the existing product is so much better.

I'm very fair, and so far the Mystic Tan has been the best ... very light and natural looking, no streaks, no orange. Definitely pricier than doing it yourself, but worth it for a special event.

Oh, and maybe this is just me being a huge dork, but every time I do the Mystic Tan I have a mini-panic-attack ... the spray is colder and more intense than I expect, and then I start to panic because I'm breathing in the spray (which apparently is not harmful), and then it's all over, I'm hyperventilating like a fool, a big naked fool standing with her arms up while getting hosed down with cold brown water. The moral of the story being: Not only does Mystic Tan give you a nice glow, it also takes you down a peg or two ;)
      • COPPERTONE SUNLESS FOAM WITH THE TWO CHAMBERS

        Fri, July 1, 2005 - 8:06 AM
        THE BEST!!
        1. Coppertone Foam
        2.Neutrogena foam
        3. MAC facial self tanner with bronzer

Even with my olive skin and potential to have a raquel Welch tan, I can still get orange if I'm not careful-that said, I have to say that Coppertone Endless summer self tanner FOAM with the two chambers (one for the tanning chemical and one with the moisturizer) is the superior product. The tan activator is separated so the product works in a matter of minutes. YOU STILL HAVE TO LET IT TRY THOUGH! I found that out when I used the lotion(the foams are MUCh easier to work with) and did not let it dry....I usually give the whole process an hour...

Clarins makes the best ones I've tried. I prefer the one for face, neck and decollete over the ones for body...but that's just me.

i'll second the coppertone endless summer. i'm a total whitey, and i use the medium/dark, and it gives me a nice, non orangey color.

A friend of mine who is a national figure building award winner has an insane tan and she is Asian and started with really pale skin.
I am going to ask her what she uses. Tanning beds are most likely part of the process which I feel are potentially deadly but I know they have great self tanners/tan extenders at those places as well. Her tan is so ultra dark and beautiful that it is staggering!

goddam i just joined this tribe just add my 2 cents about mystic tan.

i loved it but i was kinda orange compared to natural tanning.

and when i did it i panicked too! i completely forgot about being claustrophobic until those jets turned on and it was too late!

when i complained about being orange to a friend he said, oh honey EVERYBODY'S orange now!

I've noticed that in the quick make over shows-like ambush makeover...they give whiter people a tan...and by that same night they look amazing. I wonder what tanning technique they use. Anyone know? Or know how to find out?

They usually use a spray tan like Mystic Tan, where they get in a booth in a bikini and are kinda misted with the stuff.

Seriously, though, why do you want to be tan?

Being tan creates an optical illusion, it makes you appear to be skinnier. As well, I find it brings out more muscle definition.
My fav tanner is Biotherm Sunfitness in Dark, it doesn't stain clothes or sheets and it smells like fresh squeezed orange!
