Hair conditioners

Hello,

I'm new to this tribe and have a question already. I had my hair colored last week and it dried it out...a lot. It looks dead when I try to blowdry it. So I was wondering what type of conditioners (leave in, hot oil, treatments) would any of you recommend for dry hair?

Do you use a shampoo/conditioner for colortreated hair currently if not I would highly reccommend Redken color shampoos, also Matrix has a line for color treated hair. Then redken has a treatment called deep fuel that is great. Also K-pack by Joico has great products. Biosilk has a leavein serum for blowdrying. I'd stay away from hot oil it tends to leave a build up or a coating on the hair that can dry out hair even further and can make it impossible for your next coloring service to penetrate correctly. Also what did you have done on your color for it to be so damaged I wonder?

my hair has been auburnish for awhile and i just had it colored a brighter red since it was looking brown. but no bleach was used which i think i'm freaking out over it being so dry. i've had my hair bleached a number of times and it's never been like this. normally during the week i don't dry my hair just because if i do, then i have to use the straightening iron or i end up with big annette funicello hair. i've been dove moisturizing shampoo & conditioner for color treated hair which i've been using for a long time now.

I have similar dryness problems when I color my hair.

So far two things have worked pretty well: (1) Washing my hair with shampoo no more than 2 times a week, and (2) Liberal application of a heat-activated leave-in conditioner (like Thermasilk) before blow-drying.

When my hair got extremely fried, I stopped coloring and switched to glazes for several months. That helped the most.

    Good luck!

for repairing severely dry hair i suggest Biolage Hydro-Active Hair Mask. it is on the higher end as far as cost but it is worth it. for repairing i use it 3 times a week. currently i use it once every week to two weeks to maintain my healthy looking hair. it's great. be sure to really coat your hair with it though. don't be stingy. it's a mask so it's meant to be on thick. i get it at Ulta.

Yes, try a glaze next time or a demi color, it actually leaves your hair in better condition that before. ALso has usually truer richer more vibrant reds. Leaves your hair soft shiney full of life. I sound like a commercial, but it;s true. Especially since you have been bleached so much, you don't need all that permanent color on your hair every time. If your red is fading fast that is why your cuticle is blown, there for you need to reconstruct, and correct damage b-4 coloring again.

Dove and many other over the counter shampoos can be harsh on your hair or leave a coating of waxes that make your hair feel good for a few shampoos then build up. I'd like for you to ask your colorist for some samples of some redken or Paul Mitchell(cheap) hell, even Sallys carries generic's of name brand cheap thats even better than suave, dove, pantene, but you need something more prescriptive it is more, but your color and your hair will thank you for it. Also the mask in the last post great idea too. Or another cheap alt. is to use cholsterol, it is sold at supply store (ei Sally's, ect.) big tub like under 4 bucks. But that is only to be used once a week for 15 mins with a cap or saran wrap no heat for a month and then one a month for awhile it may seem soft but it needs moisture. But you still need a good color treated shampoo and cond. So go girl treat your hair right! Good luck

Thank you all for the suggestions...my hair thanks you as well. I used the k-pack on saturday and noticed the difference.

I've never heard of a glaze before. I think I'll ask for that the next time around. For now, just using all your suggestions and will try to not wash it everyday. It's hard since I'm so accustomed to it.

        Argh.

I've found that my hair really likes the Garnier Fructis system. I use the shampoo/conditioner/deep conditioner that's Fortifying for Dry or Damaged Hair. My hair is baby soft afterward and smells great!

    Give it a try!

Try olive oil. I put a little in the ends of my hair (or all over if its really dry) and leave it in for at least 15 minutes to 2 hours. Then shampoo and condition as usual. It makes your hair super soft and shiny and its cheap!

In the black hair products section there is a product called "pro line coconut oil hairdressing' that product or Aveda pomades which are much pricer will do the trick. I just colored and relaxed my hair within the same week(it's pretty long too) and I found that using a lite shampoo (watch out for those fruit acids shampoos like Garnier that are supposed to 'moisturize'- they strip moisture and color right off :o) and a great conditioner that detangles like physique or joico plus infusium and humectress as leave in left my hair really shiny. i then add some pomades and frizz ease extra and brush it through (small amounts only!) and my shine comes back in a few days. In frequent shampoos and/or washes is optimal if you can help it.

I love K-Pak also! I use the whole line.

But be careful, don't use the deep contitioner more than once a week or it can further fry your hair. I had a friend who used it everyday (because no one told her otherwise) and it damaged her hair so bad she had to cut off 4 inches.

Too much of a good thing, eh?

K-Pak is an awesome brand but I must warn you of something I was told far after I started using it:

The reason K-Pak works so well is because it really packs your hair with large doses of protein. This is fantastic when you're trying to repair your hair after damage or color, however on a daily basis can be very harmful. While it does have protein it does not have anything that provides moisturizing qualities derived from other shampoos and conditioners. K-Pak is not intended for every day use, so please don't make the mistake I did in using it every day. I am still trying to reverse the over protein with lack of moisture.

Yes, protein is not what most of us need to counteract dullness. Ideally mositure is the best remedy. Everyone's hair is different but yes 'K Pak' and its liquid protein cousin 'Apogee' which dries to such a hard protein shell that hair can crack, should be used sparingly!

Um once again. . I am the Kerastase rep!! They're Masquintense masque is fuckin amazing. . your hair has never felt so soft and beautiful after one usage. . it is expensive as all hell but it is so worth it. . .I have alot of curly hair and all I have to use is a quarter size (even that is a bit much). . .My pot of this stuff has lasted for six months now. . . there is one for fine hair and one for thick hair.

Paying alot of money to get good color and then not spending the cash on the good products is like buying a ferrari and taking it to a jiffy lube. .

Rene Ferrier (sp?) Karite is also amazing. . .

But Redken All Soft will do the trick for less also.

OK I know it's a shameless plug BUT... I make & sell my own deep conditioners because my hair used to be ever so dry in winter & hot summer and I tried everything from Aveda to Zelda and nothing worked.

My conditioner is called the Rhassoul Deep Condish - it's all natural here are the ingredients:
Rhassoul clay powder, Organic Unrefined Cocoa Butter, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Organic 100% Cocoa
Powder, Organic Unrefined Murumuru Butter, MSM, Organic Chilean Honey & 1000iu of Natural Soya Derived Vitamin E

                  More info.:
Suitable for all hair types, textures & colours.

Our Rhassoul Deep Condishes contains Unrefined Cocoa Butter & natural Soya based Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) which helps to guard scalp & hair from free radical damage. When hot liquid is added to our Rhassoul Deep Condishes, it swells & increases its surface area like a highly porous sponge. Attracting & trapping toxins into these open porous spaces so that when it comes time to rinse the Rhassoul Deep Condish from your hair the toxins are eliminated and you're left with detoxified fluffy soft tresses.

So instead of a Hot Oil treatment why not detoxify your scalp & hair.

It also smells like chocolate too and leaves my hair super soft for days.
