This week I'm loving Total Bitch lip balm from the fabulous Blue Q product line (www.blueq.com). By far my favorite tasting balm.

Evaluation is based on the following criteria:
-flavor
-emollience
-durability
-packaging

Any other criteria? What's your fave lip balm?

I make some too, well actually I make abody butter that works great as a balm too. I use shea, mango & cocoa butters with some oils like wheatgerm, rose hip, lavender essential oil--all natural stuff.

I love lip balm too! I have them stashed everywhere!

I love Avon's Flavor Savers in Cherry and Strawberry. It's not too thick and leaves a little tint on your lips.

Has anyone else tried Benefit's Dr. Feelgood Lipscription? I'm loving it ... you get one tube of silky balm and another tube of lip exfoliant. Excellent marks on the emollience and durability scale (with bonus points for the exfoliation angle), but the flavor is non-existent and packaging isn't ideal. I prefer balms where you don't have to get your finger sticky ;)

You can get it from Sephora or their website thebalm.com

Suppposedly, there is something in it that plumps your mouth. I don't really need any help in that area but...I love the way it feels and it has the right amount of shine. No Crisco-mouth!

i always go back to my Carmex. Can't beat $1.50 at walgreens, in the stick formula. And, the new ones smell like mint-chocolate chip!

      Carmex???!?!?!?!? Walgreens???!?!?!?!?
OK, rather than accuse you of heresy I'll throw out my own favorite drugstore lipgoo standby: Blistex Herbal Answer. And I'm a Loyal Long's Slut, baby. No Walgreens for me! ;)

I havent been able to kick Lip Smackers since the sixth grade. (Celestial Strawberry on the sponge tip applicator, oh yea baby!) It's inexpensive, it tastes good, smells good, looks good, and you can get it pratically anywhere.

Hi Mina, I was just being goofy. I've got absolutely nothing against non-department-store brands, especially when there's plenty of product out there that works just as well (or better) and doesn't cost a fortune. See my recommendation in the same posting for Blistex and Longs! :)

i'm a total lip balm junkie. i must have at least 15 tubes and pots of the stuff all over my house and car. burts bees regular and tinted lip balms are wonderful, with their minty-ish tingly taste. i recently got some v'tae "minty" lip balm and like that a lot. it's kind of gooey but in a good way and it's also nicely tingly. since it's shiny it doubles as a lip gloss. both are cheap and can be found in drug stores.

I'm a lip balm junkie, too. I love Aveda's colored balms -- they're subtle daily lipsticks for me. I also have chapstick, blistex and homemade balm.

The secret to getting it into the tubes is to pour it while it's melted: cocoa butter, olive oil, beeswax. Good stuff.

i tried some of that aveda tinted lip balm in one of their stores yesterday. very nice but $11/tube, ouch! the burt's bees doesn't come in as many colors but it's wonderful and only costs $4.

I'm very fond of the peachy color Burts Bees lip tint. Aveda's really pricey -- the lip balm is about the only thing I can afford! Tha's why I consider it lipstick instead of balm! LOL!

I love the Aveda Lip Saver, it is a clear lip balm with SPF; I buy it in multiples and put it all over the house, in my purse and at my desk. It is great! Also use Kiehl's, it stays on the lips forever, so you don't have to constantly re-apply. Burt's Bees is good, except in the winter when dry my skin becomes dry and sensitive, then the peppermint oil irritates my skin.

              This week's favorite balm:

Blistex Silk & Shine ... $2.50 at the drugstore. It comes in a silvery-lavendar lipstick-style tube, glides on, and makes your lips really shiny. SPF 15. Great bang for the buck. Plus, my husband said "wow, that smells really good".

I'm going to rescind my endorsement of Blistex Silk & Shine ... some lip balms (and lipsticks) seem to have an ingredient that makes my lips peel, and this turned out to be one of them.

The good news is that Blistex now has what I deem to be a Very Special Product:

    LIP INFUSION.

SPF 15. It's about $4, and comes in a tiny pearly tube with a silver ball applicator. Scores high on packaging and application style (no gooey fingers). The emollience is wonderful ... it soaks right into your lips, no leftover residue. I haven't tried it under lipstick but this seems ideal. Lasts a very long time. No lip peeling. And finally, the flavor! It has this inexplicably lovely scent and flavor, I can't put my finger on exactly what it is, but it seems reminiscent of my childhood. Sort of a burnt carmel brown sugar thing. Not too sweet. Addictive.

Buy three -- one for your bathroom, one for your purse, and one for your car.

    MWAH!

Okay, okay, i just could'nt resist. I love the one i make 'Very Vegan Luscious Lip Luster©" (coming soon) with African Cape Chestnut (natural ultra violet protection) and Red Raspberry seed oils (SPF value found to be as high as 28-50) HIBISCUS extract for added moisture power, while Organic Non GMO Soy lethicin softens. It's great as a lip mask on really dry lips also. Available soon from inky Loves Nature (inkylovesnature.com)

Well, the Blue Q line does have hot packaging. I make my own lip balms (among lots of other skin care products) and finally found those sweet little slip-cover tins I loved as a kid! What do you all think about these tins? You can view them here~

    www.trueorganicsbend.com/store/index.cfm

(this isn't a sales pitch, I really do want to know what you "product whores" think!) What about tubes vs. tins? I'm thinking about offering tubes as well, for those who don't want to stick their fingertips in.

I like interesting flavors and use a lot of honey in my concoctions for extra sweetness. Sunscreen is essential!

I agree with Lauren that emollience and durability are important. I like a balm that I can apply and I don't have to reapply again in ten minutes.

Angelina, I think your lip balms look yummy! Thanks for the link.

Personally, I don't like getting my fingers sticky with a pot or tin. For me that's a dealbreaker, but I do know some gals who don't care either way, and some who prefer pots and tins ...

Here's my new personal favorite: Chicken Poop. (contains no poop)
