i would love to get manicures every two weeks, but my nails just don't seem to last that long. They're really weak, and end up either peeling, or chipping on the side and being uneven. then i have to cut my nails down and try to let them re-grow. does anyone have any suggestions? could this be diet issue?

It could possibly be diet. I know that when that happens to me, I increase my calcium intake and my nails get better. Also, you can just try massaging your fingertips/cuticles to increase blood flow.

NAILTIQUES! I used Formula 1 but get whatever you think will work best for you. I also recommend H20+ Hand and Nail Cream, especially if your hands and nails/cuticles are at all dry.

Also, this made a big difference for me -- I switched from cutting/filing my nails in an oval shape to a very square shape. The oval shape seemed to weaken the sides of my nails and made them very prone to chipping on the side.

In terms of diet, taking Evening Primrose Oil capsules and drinking milk daily always does wonders for my hair, nails and skin.

And finally, I rarely get manicures, and when I do, I don't let them put on any polish, not even base coat. I just buff lightly or use Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer. This may be silly but I think that the no polish rule keeps my nails from getting yellow.

I'm not sure which of these fixes was the key to nail salvation, but my nails now grow very fast, very strong. I have to cut them down because they won't break.

    Good luck!

it's true cheap base coat/nail polish can oxidize.

however, if you are going to use nailtiques, know that it doesnt work for everyone. it actually promotes peeling on some, i.e. me, and some of my formet clients.

if you file your own nails just make sure you go in one direction... from outside toward middle, then pick up file and place back on outside towards middle, never 'saw' or go back and forth if you have issues with breakage, it actually promotes splitting.

find a good topcoat/hardener that works for you and apply regularly, (like every other day) this works to extend manicures and existing polish jobs too. make sure you include the very little thin edge of nail, which sort of 'seals' the nail. otherwise polish/clear coat has a perfect spot to begin it's peeling / chipping.
